About Parathyroidectomy

Parathyroidectomy is a minimally invasive procedure to remove one or more overactive parathyroid glands responsible for hyperparathyroidism. This condition results in excess parathyroid hormone (PTH), which raises blood calcium levels and can lead to fatigue, kidney stones, bone loss, and cognitive changes. Performed under general anesthesia, most patients go home the same day.
With a 97–99% success rate in treating hyperparathyroidism, Dr. Suh brings unmatched precision and expertise to every case—backed by thorough diagnostics and real-time surgical assessment

Advanced Precision with Robotic Technology

Dr. Suh offers robotic parathyroidectomy using a small, hidden incision away from the neck, resulting in minimal scarring and a faster recovery.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery:

Common Parathyroid Disorders

Hyperparathyroidism
Overactivity of one or more parathyroid glands, causing high calcium levels. Can result in bone loss, fatigue, kidney stones, and mood changes. Surgery is the gold standard treatment.

A benign tumor on a single parathyroid gland that leads to excess PTH production. Often responsible for primary hyperparathyroidism and treated with surgical removal.

Growth of multiple glands instead of one. Causes similar symptoms to adenomas and may require partial gland removal.

Occurs due to low calcium levels, often from kidney disease or vitamin D deficiency. May improve with medical treatment, but sometimes surgery is needed.

A more advanced form that persists even after kidney function improves, often requiring surgery to normalize calcium levels.

Risks and Considerations

What You Should Know

Parathyroidectomy is generally safe and effective, but like all surgeries, there are some risks:
  • Temporary low calcium may cause numbness or muscle cramps (typically short-lived)
  • Mild voice changes due to nerve irritation (usually resolves within weeks)
  • Rare risk of neck bleeding, requiring immediate care
  • In rare cases, symptoms may persist if other glands become overactive
